How Furniture Shipping in NYC Works, Piece by Piece
Most of what slows a New York pickup comes down to the furniture itself: how big it is, how it got into the apartment and how far it has to go to reach the street. Sorting those out when you book keeps pickup day short.
Measure the Way Out
A sofa that came in through a window, or was assembled inside the room, may not leave through the door. Measure the narrowest doorway and every hallway turn, and in a brownstone check the width of the stoop and the parlor floor entry.
Note which pieces come apart: legs that unscrew, a bed frame that unbolts, a sectional that splits into modules. Taken apart, they weigh the same but pack into less space on the truck, and space is part of the price.
Upper Floors and Building Rules
Every estimate covers collection from the first floor of the building. Much of the city lives higher than that, in elevator towers and prewar walk-ups, so call (866) 333-8018 to check access at your building before you book.
Co-op boards, condo associations and management companies often set their own rules for move days. Ask your managing agent what yours are as soon as you have a date.
Getting the Truck to the Curb
Truck access changes a lot from borough to borough. A detached house in Todt Hill or Grymes Hill often has a driveway, while the attached row houses of Windsor Terrace, Kensington and Bensonhurst share curb space with the whole block. In much of Manhattan, from Yorkville down to Battery Park City, loading happens at the curb outside the lobby or at a side entrance. If your building has a loading dock or a separate service door, put it on the estimate so the driver heads straight there.
Furniture New Yorkers Send Out of State
- Vintage and mid-century pieces bought at flea markets and secondhand shops
- Sofas, sleeper sofas and accent chairs that do not suit the next place
- Bed frames, mattresses and dressers from a sublet or a roommate apartment
- Dining tables, bar carts and bookcases
- Artwork, mirrors and antiques that call for a crate
- A desk and office chair after a job change
Furniture Coming Into New York
Shipping furniture to New York from another state is priced the same way, by weight and space. There are three delivery levels. Will-Call is the lowest price: you collect the shipment yourself at the destination terminal. Curbside Delivery drops it at the closest point the truck can reach. Full Service carries each piece inside, the white glove furniture delivery service most NYC buyers want for a sofa or a bed. If your lease start slips, short-term storage at the destination terminal can hold everything until you are ready.
Timing Around Lease Dates and Winter
A lot of New York leases begin on the first of the month, so the last week of any month is when buildings book up their elevator and move slots fastest. Pickups land 2 to 10 business days after you book, and booking 10 or more days ahead gives you the best shot at the date you want. In January and February, plowed snow along the curb can limit where a truck can stop, so keep a clear path from the door to the street if a storm is in the forecast.
