The Road North: I-15, Cajon Summit and the Nevada Line
The drive is about 332 miles, almost all of it on I-15 through California and Nevada. I-15 runs north through Escondido and on out of San Diego County, and the route can use the I-215 branch through Riverside and San Bernardino before rejoining I-15 ahead of Cajon Pass. That is roughly 5 to 6 hours of driving, a road figure only, since a shared truck makes other stops.
The high point is Cajon Summit at 4,190 feet. The California Highway Patrol counts an average of 160,000 vehicles a day there and lists snow, ice, fog and temperatures from below freezing to above 110 F. If weather holds a truck at the summit, there is no fee; the load moves once conditions clear.
Desert Heat, Valley Frost and the Odd Tropical Storm
Past the summit the road crosses the high desert near Barstow. NOAA normals for the Barstow-Daggett airport show a 105.0 F July high and 88.1 days a year at 100 F or more, against 0.1 such days and a 75.3 F July high at Lindbergh Field. Ship Smart’s warehouses are climate controlled; the trucks are not, so pack candles, records and photo prints with that in mind.
Winter turns it around: Las Vegas averages 9.8 nights a year at or below freezing (Barstow-Daggett 24.3). Liquids that could freeze are worth leaving out of a late fall or winter load.
The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs May 15 to November 30. In August 2023, Hilary’s moisture set a San Diego daily rainfall record (1.82 inches on August 20), dropped 2 to 4 inches over southern Nevada, cut off Mount Charleston and closed several Clark County roads. Storms like that are rare here, and the same no-fee rule covers them.
Pickup in North County: The Escondido Weekday Rule
Escondido’s encroachment permit guideline allows work in the public right of way only Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with temporary no-parking signs posted 72 hours ahead. If your pickup there ever needs a posted curb, plan a weekday date with at least 72 hours for the signs to go up.
Ship Smart arranges the permit when an address needs one and lists the cost in your delivery charges. Where no posted curb is needed, weekend or after-hours pickups are possible in most areas, confirmed and priced by the local warehouse. Every estimate includes white glove pickup from the first floor, and booking at least 10 days ahead is a good idea.
Delivery in the Las Vegas Valley: City or County?
Much of the valley is unincorporated Clark County. The county’s town advisory boards cover Enterprise, Paradise, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor, Whitney and Winchester, all outside the City of Las Vegas, and Henderson and North Las Vegas are cities of their own. Curb rules follow the exact address.
- City of Las Vegas: a commercial vehicle may stand in front of a home only while it is loaded or unloaded without delay (LVMC 11.52.305), so have a clear path ready.
- Unincorporated Clark County: county code enforcement lists parking a commercial vehicle within 1,000 feet of a residential district as unlawful. Ship Smart provides any permit the address needs.
- Gated streets: we register with the gatehouse. Where a big truck cannot enter, curbside is not available, so you book inside delivery, which brings a crew and a smaller truck.
- Towers: a certificate of insurance costs $100 per building ($1 million policies). You book the service elevator; a missed slot is rescheduled with priority.
Deliveries are by appointment, and a Monday to Friday window from 9 to 3 costs nothing extra.
Pricing a Small Load with San Diego to Las Vegas Movers
When moving to Las Vegas from San Diego, your price follows the weight and space your items take. With an accurate inventory the final bill lands within a couple of percent of the quote, and there is no deposit. Minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item, and one piece can weigh up to about 2,000 lb.
Delivery charges apply only when an address calls for them: $100 per flight of stairs after the first floor in most markets, a $100 flat elevator rate above the 4th floor, a permit where one is required, and the certificate of insurance. Suburbs and distance are built into the estimate, so Henderson or Summerlin is priced to the address. The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price.
Who Makes This Move
IRS migration data for 2022 to 2023 counts 1,808 households (3,142 people) moving from San Diego County to Clark County, and 1,125 households going the other way: about 1.6 leaving for every 1 coming back. A year earlier the outbound count was 1,968, so the flow eased by about 8% while the return flow held almost flat.
What Customers Say About Small Loads
From a review on our San Diego profile, cal595 wrote: “Best way to ship items that are too small or weigh too little for a big mover. The items arrived in perfect condition and the staff was pleasant and courteous.”
