About 1,470 Miles East, Most of It on I-10
By road, Houston is about 1,470 miles from San Diego, roughly 21 to 25 hours of driving, not counting stops. The first 335 miles or so are I-8, climbing over the mountains of eastern San Diego County and meeting I-10 near Casa Grande, Arizona.
After that the lane is a single interstate. I-10 carries the load for about 1,090 miles across southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and West Texas, then east past the Hill Country and onto the Katy Freeway, the name Houston uses for I-10 west of downtown.
The Final Stretch Doubles as an Evacuation Route
When a major hurricane threatens Houston and mandatory evacuations are ordered, local authorities working with the State Operations Center can reverse the eastbound lanes of I-10 so they carry evacuees west, for about 130 miles, starting at the Colorado County line west of Sealy, on the same interstate this lane uses. Those are the same eastbound lanes a San Diego shipment uses on its last leg into Houston.
While that plan is in effect, a Houston delivery may be rescheduled. Once the lanes return to normal, the appointment is set again as soon as the weather clears.
Apartment and Rental Pickups in San Diego
In the City of San Diego, more homes are rented than owned: 53.5% of occupied homes are rentals, and 21.9% of all housing units are in buildings with 20 or more units (Census Bureau, ACS 2024). Pickup day is often move-out day at an apartment building.
- The building slot is yours to book. Reserve the freight elevator or dock with management. Given a few days’ notice, the crew can work to that slot most of the time, and a missed slot is rescheduled with priority.
- Insurance certificates. If the property manager asks for one, a certificate of insurance is $100 per building, on a $1 million policy.
- Upper floors. Every estimate includes white glove pickup from the first floor. Above that, most markets charge $100 per flight of stairs, or a flat $100 for an elevator building above the 4th floor; rates can vary by city.
- Self-storage. A storage unit is loaded on the same terms as a home, with elevator access up to the 3rd floor included and a flat $75 above it.
- Lease dates. Pickup is scheduled two to ten business days after booking, so book against your move-out date. Weekend or after-hours pickups are possible in most areas, confirmed and priced by the local warehouse.
- Already gone? Anyone you appoint, such as a roommate or a friend, can release your items as long as they sign.
If the street outside needs a permit, Ship Smart arranges it and the cost goes into the delivery charges. Not every city requires one.
Delivery in Houston: A Far Wetter Climate
Houston Intercontinental averages 51.84 inches of rain a year, spread over about 104 days (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), roughly five times what falls on San Diego. June makes the gap plain: 6.00 inches in Houston, against 0.05 inches at Lindbergh Field.
Delivery is by appointment, with a free weekday window from 9 to 3, so you choose the day. Ship Smart’s warehouses are climate controlled; the trucks are not.
When the Truck Cannot Reach the Door
- Where a full-size truck cannot reach your door, curbside delivery is not an option; inside delivery, with a crew and a smaller truck, is the service to book.
- In a gated subdivision, the crew registers at the gatehouse.
How the Price for Moving From San Diego to Houston Is Built
Your shipment travels as LTL freight, sharing a truck with other customers’ loads. The bill follows the weight and volume picked up, and with an accurate inventory the quote comes within a couple of percent of the final figure. There is no deposit; a $75 minimum cancellation fee applies once the contract is complete.
Minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item, and one piece can weigh up to about 2,000 lb. Delivery charges appear only when your move calls for them: the stair, elevator and certificate charges above, inside delivery where the truck cannot reach the door, a permit where the address needs one (costs vary by city), assembly at $100 an hour (simple bed frames are usually free), and a second San Diego area stop such as a storage unit, priced by distance.
You can pack your own boxes, or book on-site packing of loose items at $150 an hour (2-hour minimum) plus materials; furniture packing and crating are priced per shipment. Coverage of $0.10 per lb is included, and full replacement coverage costs $25 to $35 per $1,000 of value, depending on the deductible. The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price, and financing is available through Enhancify.
How Many San Diego Households Move to Harris County
IRS migration data counts 721 San Diego County households (1,292 people) moving to Harris County in 2022 to 2023, while 511 made the opposite move. A year earlier it was 711 out and 483 in: about three households headed to Houston for every two that came back.
In 2022 to 2023 Harris County finished ahead of Bexar County (606) and Travis County (530), and it ranked fifth among all out-of-state counties, after Maricopa, Clark, King and Honolulu.
From a Review on Our San Diego Profile
Sally J. used Ship Smart to move her parents from Pennsylvania into California, a different lane, but her note speaks to the delivery end: she wrote that “everything arrived in good shape” and called the “delivery team courteous.”
