The Texas End: I-20 and I-30 Into the Metroplex
This lane reaches Dallas from the west. After about 421 miles on I-20 across West Texas, the truck switches to I-30 near the Parker and Tarrant county line for the last 44 miles, through Fort Worth and Arlington into downtown Dallas.
The Fort Worth to Dallas section opened in 1957 as the Dallas Fort Worth Turnpike and has carried the Tom Landry Highway name since 2001. For a Tarrant County address, enter its exact ZIP code; suburbs and distance are factored into the estimate.
The Whole Drive
San Diego to Dallas is about 1,360 miles by road, roughly 19 to 23 hours of driving (road time, not delivery time) across California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The truck takes I-8 east to I-10 near Casa Grande, follows I-10 for about 543 miles, then picks up I-20 at its start in Reeves County and crosses 15 Texas counties to Parker County.
Heat, Frost and Roadwork on I-20
West Texas is harsher than either end: Midland International Airport, beside I-20, averages 23.8 days a year at 100 F or hotter (DFW Airport: 20.3) and 57.8 freezing nights, about twice DFW’s 29.2, plus 4.3 inches of snow (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). Ship Smart’s warehouses are climate controlled but the trucks are not, so houseplants and wine should ride with you.
TxDOT is also rebuilding I-20 at FM 1788 west of Midland, with a new bridge and added main lanes. Work began in fall 2026, and TxDOT lists completion for early 2028. Work zones like this are one reason transit varies by lane.
Pickup in Chula Vista and the South Bay
Every estimate includes white glove pickup from the first floor. Above it, stairs run $100 per flight in most markets, or a flat $100 for an elevator building above the 4th floor. Pickup is scheduled two to ten business days after booking, and booking at least 10 days ahead is recommended.
Chula Vista adds a timing rule at the curb. A temporary no-parking zone there can only get a parked car towed if the signs were posted and logged on the city’s ACTChulaVista app at least 72 hours ahead, under an approved traffic control permit. If parking is tight on your Chula Vista block, say so when you book. Ship Smart arranges the permit when an address needs one, with the cost in the delivery charges, and an early booking leaves room for those 72 hours.
Delivery in Dallas
- Street parking: the City of Dallas sells meter hooding and temporary No Parking reservations on two business days’ notice, though not for personal use, and blocking a lane takes a Public Works traffic control permit. When an address needs a permit, Ship Smart arranges it and the cost goes in the delivery charges.
- High-rises: a certificate of insurance is $100 per building, on a $1 million policy. You book the freight elevator or dock; a missed slot is rescheduled with priority.
- Gated subdivisions: the crew registers at the gatehouse.
- No truck access: curbside delivery is not offered there, so you book inside delivery, with a crew and a smaller truck.
Dallas is also wetter: DFW Airport averages 37.01 inches of rain a year, almost four times Lindbergh Field’s 9.79, and May is its wettest month at 4.78 inches. A storm delay carries no fee; delivery is rescheduled once the weather clears.
Clearing Out After You Arrive
Old furniture, mattresses or carpet you replace in Dallas can go out for the city’s monthly bulky-item collection. Set them at the curb only on the Thursday to Sunday before your collection week, up to 10 cubic yards a month; electronics, tires and glass are not collected. Check your week with Dallas Sanitation.
How the Price Is Built
The price follows the weight and volume picked up, and with an accurate inventory the final bill lands within a couple of percent of the quote. There is no deposit, and a $75 minimum cancellation fee applies once the contract is complete. Minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item.
Picture two couches, a bed frame and a dresser going from a ground-floor Chula Vista townhome to a third-floor walk-up in Dallas:
- The base price covers their space on the shared truck and the first-floor pickup.
- Two flights of stairs in Dallas typically add $100 each.
- A permit, if either curb needs one, goes in the delivery charges.
- A simple bed frame is usually reassembled free; other assembly is $100 an hour.
- Coverage of $0.10 per lb is included; full replacement is $25 to $35 per $1,000 of value.
