The Road from San Diego to Boston: About 3,030 Miles
Freight leaves San Diego County on I-8, swings north on SR 85 to meet I-10, and follows I-10 and then I-17 through central Arizona up to I-40. I-40 crosses New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma, and I-44 and I-70 carry the load on to Ohio. In all it is roughly 3,030 miles through 13 states and about 45 to 55 hours of driving, which is road time, not the delivery schedule.
The eastern third is the part worth knowing. I-80 crosses Pennsylvania to I-81, which meets I-84 in the state’s northeast corner. I-84 crosses the Hudson in New York State on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the New York State Bridge Authority’s busiest span (28.5 million crossings in 2024). In Waterbury, Connecticut, it runs through the Mixmaster, a stacked interchange that CTDOT said in 2022 carries almost 200,000 vehicles a day, about twice its design load. On the Mass Pike from Sturbridge to Weston, state rules hold heavy trucks to the right-hand lane except to pass. The carrier sets the exact path.
Pickup in San Diego Around UC San Diego’s Quarter End
UC San Diego’s spring quarter ends Friday, June 11, 2027, with commencement on June 12 and 13. Clearing out an apartment in La Jolla or University City for Boston? Plan backward from that weekend.
Pickup is scheduled between two and ten business days after booking, and booking at least 10 days ahead is recommended, so name the date you want (say, the Monday after commencement) when you book. If your Boston lease starts later than your move-out, origin storage is possible in most cases.
White glove pickup from the first floor is included. Above it, stairs are $100 per flight in most markets, or a flat $100 above the 4th floor in an elevator building. A building that wants a certificate of insurance adds $100 per building for a $1 million policy, and you reserve any freight elevator with a few days’ notice.
Delivery in Boston, Newton and the Inner Suburbs
Boston does not require a permit for a moving truck, but a Parking Clerk permit guarantees the space: two curb spaces, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for $69 (plus $40 if metered), booked online 15 days to 8 weeks ahead. Ship Smart provides any permit an address requires and folds its cost into the delivery charges. Because the Boston reservation is optional, ask when you book whether your street calls for one and who will reserve it. Moving trucks may not use Storrow Drive, Memorial Drive or Soldiers Field Road.
Newton issues parking permits through its Police Department Traffic Bureau, and residents can reserve metered spaces through the city’s Parking Meter Reservations Application. From December 1 to March 31, no vehicle may stay on a public street more than an hour between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. ($25 fine). Suburbs and distance are factored into your estimate.
Deliveries are by appointment, with a free Monday to Friday window between 9 and 3. On a street too tight for the truck, curbside is not available; you would book inside delivery with a crew and a smaller truck.
How the Price for This Move Is Built
Your price follows the weight and volume picked up, and with an accurate inventory the quote lands within a couple of percent of the final bill, with no deposit. Minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item. Delivery charges that can apply here:
- Stair flights or a certificate of insurance at either end, at the rates above.
- Curb permits where the address needs one.
- A second Greater Boston stop, priced by distance, such as a Somerville storage unit plus a Newton apartment.
- Assembly at $100 per hour (simple bed frames are usually free), and on-site packing of loose items at $150 per hour, two hour minimum, plus materials. You may pack your own boxes.
Basic valuation of $0.10 per pound is included, and financing is available through Enhancify. The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price.
Winter Weather on the Eastern Half
PennDOT’s storm plan restricts trucks by tier. Last winter, on February 22, 2026, it put I-84 under Tier 4, where “no commercial vehicles are permitted,” and on March 3 it placed I-80 east of I-79, I-81 north of I-78 and all of I-84 under Tier 1, which bars unloaded or lightly loaded box trucks. While a tier like that is in force, freight on this lane can wait.
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals show why. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton airport station, where I-81 hands off to I-84, averages 45.1 inches of snow and 122 nights at or below freezing a year; Worcester, just north of the Mass Pike, averages 72.9 inches and about 130 freezing nights; Boston Logan averages about 92 freezing nights. A weather delay carries no fee, and delivery is rescheduled once the weather clears. Warehouses are climate controlled, but trucks are not.
Who Moves Between San Diego County and Greater Boston
IRS data count 562 San Diego County households moving to Greater Boston (Suffolk, Middlesex and Norfolk counties) in 2022 to 2023, and Middlesex, home to Cambridge, Somerville and Newton, drew the most. Even more go the other way: 742 Greater Boston households moved to San Diego County that year.
