The Road East: I-8, I-10, Then a Long Run on I-20
By road, Atlanta is about 2,140 miles from San Diego, roughly 32 to 37 hours of driving before any stops. It opens with I-8 to Casa Grande in central Arizona, then I-10 across southern Arizona and New Mexico into West Texas.
The last leg is what makes this lane its own. I-20 carries about 1,219 miles, close to 57% of the trip, across West and North Texas, northern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama into Georgia.
Where the Clock Jumps Ahead
The final time-zone change comes on I-20 at the Alabama-Georgia line, where clocks move to Eastern time. Atlanta ends up 3 hours ahead of San Diego, so delivery appointments, including the free Monday to Friday window from 9 to 3, run on Atlanta time: a 9 a.m. start there is 6 a.m. in San Diego.
Summer Heat Past the Desert
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals put July highs along I-20 at 94.3 F in Shreveport, 92.1 F in Jackson, Mississippi and 91.0 F in Birmingham, against 75.3 F at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. Ship Smart’s warehouses are climate controlled, but the trucks are not.
Storm Season Reaches Inland
When Hurricane Laura came ashore on August 27, 2020, the National Hurricane Center found hurricane-force gusts at least halfway across Louisiana near its track, and the airports in Shreveport and Monroe, two I-20 cities farther north, logged gusts over 50 knots. If weather like that holds your shipment, the delay carries no fee.
Pickup on Naval Base San Diego
Moving out of quarters on Naval Base San Diego? Ship Smart picks up from on-base military housing and registers at the gatehouse, but base rules decide when a crew gets through the gate.
- Sponsor the crew. Vendors not enrolled in DBIDS, the access-control system the base uses, need a sponsor and a completed SECNAV Form 5512/1.
- Watch the pass office hours. The Visitor Control Center at 3101 Harbor Drive works weekdays only, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., first come first served, and closes on federal holidays.
- Choose a weekday. Weekend pickups are possible in most areas, confirmed and priced by the local warehouse, but for a base address, set a date that lets the visitor paperwork be finished in those hours.
Off base, a white glove crew loads from the first floor, with pickup scheduled within ten business days of booking. If your San Diego curb needs a permit, Ship Smart arranges it.
Delivery Across Metro Atlanta
Georgia law keeps through trucks on I-285, the Perimeter; a truck heads inside it only to pick up or deliver there.
- City of Atlanta curb space: ATLDOT posts a $35 permit fee, $15 a day for up to 100 feet of a traffic lane and $17 a day per parking meter, with proof of insurance. If your delivery address needs a permit, Ship Smart arranges it and the cost appears in your delivery charges.
- Decatur: if you plan to set a storage POD or dumpster at a Decatur curb, the city requires a Right of Way Permit ($50 fee) and a liability certificate or owner’s letter.
- Towers and condos: a certificate of insurance costs $100 per building, on a $1 million policy. You book the freight elevator or dock; a missed slot is rescheduled with priority.
- Tight intown streets: where the trailer cannot reach your door, curbside delivery is off the table; book inside delivery with a crew and a smaller truck.
Snow is rare in Atlanta, but it can stop traffic. On January 28, 2014, 1 to 3 inches over parts of the metro stranded thousands of drivers, some for more than 20 hours, according to the National Weather Service. Delivery is simply rescheduled once roads clear.
How Your Atlanta Price Is Built
There is no flat truck rate. The price follows the weight and volume picked up, and with an accurate inventory the quote lands within a couple of percent of the final bill. No deposit is taken; a $75 minimum cancellation fee applies once the contract is complete. Minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item.
Delivery charges are added only when your addresses need them:
- Stairs above the first floor: $100 per flight in most markets, or a flat $100 for an elevator building above the 4th floor. Rates can vary by city.
- Assembly in Atlanta at $100 an hour, with simple bed frames usually free.
- A San Diego storage unit is picked up like a home, with an elevator to the 3rd floor included and a flat $75 above that.
- On-site packing of loose items at $150 an hour (2 hour minimum) plus materials.
Valuation of $0.10 per lb is included; full replacement coverage costs $25 to $35 per $1,000 of value, depending on a $100, $250 or $500 deductible. The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price, and financing is available through Enhancify.
