The Road West: I-80 Over the Plains, I-70 Through the Rockies
The trip is about 1,749 miles by road. The usual route leaves Chicago on I-88 across northern Illinois, joins I-80 through Iowa and Nebraska, angles southwest on I-76 into Colorado and follows I-70 over the Rockies into Utah. I-15 carries the last leg, clipping a corner of Arizona before Nevada.
Driving time runs roughly 26 to 31 hours with no stops. That is road time for one car; a shared trailer also stops for other customers, so shipping time is its own number.
Colorado Chain Law, September Through May
On the usual route, I-70 west of milepost 259 at Morrison, all the way to the Utah line, falls under Colorado’s commercial chain law. From September 1 to May 31, any truck rated at 16,001 lb or more must carry chains there (Colorado Department of Transportation). A freight tractor-trailer is rated far above that line.
If a chain-up or a closed pass holds a load, Ship Smart charges nothing for the delay.
Pickup in Jefferson Park, Norwood Park and Edison Park
These Northwest Side blocks are largely bungalows and other single-family homes, and the truck often loads from the street. Chicago bars trucks and commercial vehicles from parking on residential streets at any time, except for one “actually and expeditiously being loaded or unloaded” (Municipal Code 9-64-170). A truck parked outside that exception can be immobilized or impounded without notice.
So have the house ready. Take bed frames apart, tape and label the boxes, and group every outgoing piece near the front door, so loading runs straight through. White glove pickup from the first floor is included.
Pickup lands 2 to 10 business days after booking, so reserve at least 10 days ahead. Weekend or after-hours pickup is offered in most areas, confirmed and priced by the local warehouse.
Delivery in Las Vegas: Curb Rules, Gates and Towers
The Las Vegas rule echoes the Chicago one, down to the word “expeditiously.” Under the City of Las Vegas code (LVMC 11.52.305), a commercial vehicle may stand in front of a home only while goods are being “expeditiously loaded or unloaded,” and the city publishes no moving-truck permit.
That code stops at the city line. Henderson, North Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County, which takes in the Strip, Spring Valley and Enterprise, write their own rules. Where an address does need a permit, Ship Smart provides it and the cost goes into the delivery accessorials.
Guard Gates and Private Streets
Behind a guard gate or a call box, Ship Smart registers the crew at the gatehouse. Where private streets cannot take a large truck, you would book inside delivery, with a crew and a smaller truck. An upstairs unit reached by outdoor stairs carries the stair charge ($100 per flight in most markets).
Towers Near the Strip and Downtown
Condo towers set their own move rules. A building that wants proof of insurance gets a certificate at $100 per building, backed by a $1 million policy. You reserve the service elevator; given a few days’ notice, the crew can meet your slot most of the time, and a missed slot is rebooked with priority.
July at the Las Vegas End
National Weather Service normals give Las Vegas 78.2 days a year at 100 F or hotter, 25.8 of them in July, and a normal July low of 82.0 F, so nights stay hot too. Ship Smart’s warehouses are climate controlled; the trucks are not.
For a summer delivery, keep candles, vinyl records, photographs, medications and small electronics with you.
What Movers From Chicago to Las Vegas Charge for a Small Load
Your price is built from the weight and volume picked up; with an accurate inventory, the quote lands within a couple of percent of what you pay. No deposit is taken; once the contract is complete, cancelling costs a $75 minimum fee. A shipment can be one piece or run to about 2,000 lb, with no hard limit, and minimums start at $600 to $700 for one small item.
Other movers’ price tables for this route go by bedroom count or cubic feet; none prices by weight or lists a load under about 2,000 lb, which is where a few pieces from Chicago fall.
The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price.
Furniture packing and crating are in the shipment price. Possible extras:
- Stairs: $100 per flight after the first floor in most markets; an elevator above the 4th floor is a flat $100.
- On-site packing of loose items: $150 an hour (2-hour minimum) plus materials.
- Assembly: $100 an hour.
- Expedited service to lock in dates: typically 20 to 25% on top.
The $0.10 per lb basic valuation comes standard. Full replacement coverage costs $25 to $35 per $1,000 of value, depending on the deductible, and Enhancify offers financing.
Who Ships From Cook County to Clark County
IRS county migration data counts 749 households (1,185 people) moving from Cook County to Clark County in 2022 to 2023, while 482 households went the other way.
On a different route, Glenn G. had an old barber chair shipped from storage in Washington State to Nevada and wrote in a 2015 review: “They were the least expensive on rates, and highest in customer service, as my chair arrived in perfect condition as promised and on time.”
