The Lane: 282 Miles, Three States and One Clock Change
By road the trip is about 282 miles, roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours of driving. The fastest road route takes the Chicago Skyway and Indiana Toll Road (both I-90) out of Illinois, about 200 miles of I-94 from northwest Indiana across lower Michigan, then M-14 and the Jeffries Freeway (I-96) into downtown Detroit. Those are road hours, not a delivery time: a shared trailer runs on the carrier schedule.
Eastbound, clocks jump ahead an hour at the Indiana and Michigan line on I-94: LaPorte County, Indiana, keeps Central time and Berrien County, Michigan, is on Eastern. Book your Detroit appointment on Eastern time.
Those first Michigan miles, in Berrien County, can turn white fast: on February 7, 2003, a sudden lake-effect squall on I-94 there caused a crash that killed one person and injured 47. If weather holds a truck, there is no delay fee, and delivery is rescheduled once it clears.
Pickup in Lakeview, Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village: Ward Moving Signs
Two-flats, three-flats and courtyard buildings can leave little open curb on a weekday. Some ward offices give residents moving-day No Parking signs (the 44th Ward’s are free). They are courtesy signs: they ask neighbors to keep the space clear, but they cannot get a car ticketed or towed.
Terms differ by office. In Lakeview, the 44th Ward gives signs to residents who bring proof of residency and a photo ID, for one day and an 8 hour window (8 AM to 4 PM or 9 AM to 5 PM), posted at least 48 hours ahead. Street cleaning signs take priority, and the signs do not apply on commercial streets with pay-box parking. The 32nd Ward office issues its signs at least 24 hours before the move, valid 6 AM to 6 PM for one day. In Wicker Park or Ukrainian Village, look up your ward and ask that office what it offers.
Book first, then collect signs for the confirmed day, since pickup is scheduled 2 to 10 business days after booking. Pickup includes white glove service from the first floor; in most markets each flight above it adds $100, and stair prices can vary by city.
Delivery in Detroit and Its Suburbs
City Permits and Permit-Parking Blocks
Detroit permits work that occupies a street or curb lane through DPW City Engineering, under a permit called Occupying the Right-of-Way. When a delivery address needs a permit, Ship Smart provides it and lists the cost in the delivery accessorials.
The Municipal Parking Department also enforces residential permit-parking zones in the Cass Park area, on Selden Street and in Brush Park, often starting after 5 p.m. A weekday 9 to 3 delivery window costs nothing extra and ends before then. Where the truck cannot reach your door, curbside is not possible, so you would book inside delivery, which sends a crew with a smaller truck.
Spring Frost Laws
During the spring thaw, Michigan cuts the weight heavy trucks may carry on local roads. Dearborn’s 2026 frost law began February 17 (axle loads down 25 percent on concrete, 35 percent on other roads), and MDOT lifted its last state trunkline limits on May 15. A March or April delivery to a side street can be affected.
How the Cost to Move From Chicago to Detroit Is Built
Your price follows the weight and volume we pick up. With an accurate inventory, the bill lands within a couple of percent of the quote, and there is no deposit. Loads run from one piece to about 2,000 lb, and minimums start at $600 to $700 for a small single item.
Extras apply only when needed: stairs, a $100 certificate of insurance per building ($1 million policy) if a Detroit tower asks for one, a delivery permit, assembly at $100 per hour (simple bed frames are usually free), or a second Chicago stop such as a storage unit, priced by distance. The online estimator or (866) 333-8018 gives your exact price.
None of the moving pages that rank for this trip prices anything smaller than a studio or one bedroom; pricing by weight gives a single armoire its own price. Financing is available through Enhancify.
Who Moves From Cook County to Metro Detroit
About 935 Cook County households (1,377 people) moved to Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties in 2022 to 2023, IRS data. Oakland County drew the most, 474 households against 344 for Wayne County, home of Detroit itself. So give us the full delivery address, not just a city name.
Kristy B., who shipped two antique pieces from Washington State to Michigan, wrote: “Awesome shipping company for small furniture items that just aren’t large enough to qualify for the large van lines.” And: “Crews on both ends were very professional and efficient.”
